HILDEGARD - "NO LIMIT TO MY WICKEDNESS WHEN I'M WORKING"

Madame Midnight is the woman in Ace of Wands that young viewers are meant to hiss and boo. Hildegard Neil who plays her says:

"Madame Midnight is a very wicked woman. Even the siamese cat in the programme took a dislike to her and I collected a few scratches during rehearsals."

To win the cat's sympathy, Hildegard took her own black and white cat to the television studios.

And now that a has a regular place in the series too. But the cat has no name. "It was an alley cat and I would be grateful for suggestions, " says Hildegard.

As an actress she is used to playing villainous roles.

"Once, on television, I poisoned people with chocolate and in The Suicide Club in the Mystery And Imagination series I was the Woman in Black, an accomplice to murder. There has been no limit to my wickedness," she says.

If she looks defiant in our picture (left) it is because we are showing her as she really is, without the blonde wig she wears in the programme.

A photograph of Hildegard accompanied the article. Interestingly, and eagle-eyed readers will have spotted this already, this article appeared the week after the story "One And One And One Are Four" finished. Presumably, someone in the TVTimes misunderstood a Thames press release relating to that story and assumed Madame Midnight was a continuing, rather than one-off, villain.
