Interviews: PAMELA LONSDALE, 1984

Simon Coward: What series had you worked on prior to Ace of Wands?

Pamela Lonsdale: Prior to Ace of Wands I had worked on Smith by Leon Garfield and The Queen Street Gang by Desmond Skirrow.

SC: How did you become involved in the series?

PL: I became involved with the series because I had been working with its creator, Trevor Preston, and we devised Ace of Wands together.

SC: Did you have any particular actors or actresses in mind for the regular parts?

PL: Only Tony Selby as Tarot's side-kick.

SC: What caused you to leave the programme after series two?

PL: I gave up producing the series because I was asked to set up the pre-school series Rainbow which was something of a challenge.

SC: Were you involved in the casting of the parts of Chas and Mikki for the third series before you left?

PL: Yes, I was involved in the new casting and we knew well in advance that Judy Loe and Tony Selby wished to leave the series as they had other commitments.

SC: What were your favourite stories?

PL: "The Joker" and "Seven Serpents, Sulphur and Salt".

SC: Were you aware of the fact that most of the master tapes of the series have now been erased? How do you react to it?

PL: After a series has been repeated in the UK and after it has been sold abroad it is normal for the master tapes to be wiped as it is impossible to store all the programmes ever recorded.

SC: Do you think the series would stand up well now?

PL: The last series is still on tape, and yes, I think it would stand up reasonably well if shown again. It is interesting that Callan which was made about the same time is a great success on Channel 4.

SC: After all this time, how do you view the series?

PL: I viewed the series with great affection and it was in fact. one of the most successful series we have ever transmitted.

SC: Do you have any special memories of it?

PL: All memories are special.

SC: If there a chance that Mr. Stabs will become a series?

PL: It isn't yet known whether Mr Stabs will become a series. I think it is rather unlikely.

SC: Thank you very much.
